New Mexico offers adventures at every turn. White sand deserts, red rock formations, and miles of national forests and Native reservations leave plenty of nature to be explored. Experience the strong Native American influence on this beautiful part of the Southwest.
White Sands National Park is located in the southern reaches of New Mexico between Alamogordo and Las Cruces. The rolling white sand dunes sculpted by constant wind seem to go on forever as you drive down the park roads. White Sands is a unique and peaceful place to spend a day exploring the dunes or catch an epic sunset over the mountains in the distance. There aren’t any public campgrounds within the national park, but there are plenty of RV, campsite, and hotel accommodation options nearby to pull up to in your camper van. A few hours southwest of White Sands NP will take you to New Mexico’s iconic Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The intricate cave systems here are some of the most unique and famous in the world, allowing visitors to explore the complex cave systems and get up close to stalactites and stalagmites with wild textures formed over thousands of years. From April to October, guests visiting the park at dusk can witness the thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats make their exodus from the cave each night. New Mexico's Central region is the heart of the state. It’s home state’s largest city and only metropolitan area, Albuquerque. Here you can find great activities like America’s Longest Tramway which takes visitors up two miles high into a sky full of hot air balloons views from above. The northeastern reaches of New Mexico are the perfect place to get into nature with your camper van. The area has more plains than peaks, making it easy for travelers to explore in their camper van rental. Route 66 also travels through this region with dozens of historic road trip stops to choose from. The nearby cities of Santa Fe and Taos are all historically artistic areas, home to nearly 300 art galleries and museums as well as artists that have painted mesmerizing works for generations. New Mexico's Northwest region is home to the Navajo Nation and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. Take your camper van to Zuni, New Mexico’s largest pueblo, or head on over to the land of the Jicarilla Apache Nation where you can walk in the footsteps of ancient people. Witness scenic rock formations in the remote canyon at Chaco Canyon National Historic Park while touring northern New Mexico in your camper van. Grab your map, crank the tunes and let the adventure begin.
