Explore New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns National Park, with 200 miles of mapped caves and 47,000 acres of total area waiting for discovery.
You can choose from a variety of cavern tours in the park. You have some options: you could tour on your own or join a ranger guided tour for an informative and historic experience. There are two popular guided trails, one being the Big Room trail where you’ll get to see beautiful rock formations that look like icicles hanging down from the ceiling. You'll also get to gaze at stalagmites and other fascinating rocks formed by minerals over thousands of years. The second is the Natural Entrance trail which will take about one hour round trip but it gives visitors access to an incredible viewpoint overlooking the Royal Flush waterfall falling into Grand Canyon below. A camper van rental is a great way to visit this wondrous place.
The Carlsbad Caverns has 120 caves known at this time. This number will change as exploration continues.
The caverns were forged by sulfuric acid, not water erosion, as is the case with most limestone caves.
The largest cave in the park is Lechuguilla Cave at 140 miles (225 km).
